Right from the beginning the complex, built in 1906/07, was supposed to form a contrast to the anonymous tenement houses with their dark backyards typical of Berlin. Therefore, during construction, special attention was paid to the cultural use of the arrangement of buildings. The biggest residential and business area in Germany was redeveloped completely in the 1990s. The historic buildings with their courtyards are protected under-conservation-of-monuments regulations making the area a colourful mix of culture and commerce. Especially popular with guests and locals is the vaudeville theatre, the repertory cinema, and the restaurants, as well as the art and designer shops.
