The building of Heidelberg's Univeristy Library is one of the most impressive ones of the city. The building was finished in 1905 and holds some of the books of the ancient "Bibliotheka Palatina" the famous medieval book collection, which the Pope had taken possession of during the 30 years war. In addition the Codex Manesse, the biggest handwritten collection of German songs of the middle ages - a tremendous cultural and historical document - is kept here. Today Heidelberg's University Library houses up to 3.13 mill. volumes.
