Berlin - Charlottenburg Palace

« back    Berlin

Today the baroque palace belongs to the most magnificent construction ensembles of the Prussian kings within the city of Berlin. At the moment of its construction, the arrangement was still surrounded by the rural areas of the former Prussian capital which were rich in water. However, already in the early days, the city, which now has four million people, expanded almost all the way to the castle. Inside the castle, there was once was a famous amber room with a wall panel made of amber, which was called the eighth wonder of the world. In 1716, Friedrich Wilhelm the 1st gave the room to the Russian czar Peter the Great. Today several museums and exhibits are in the castle and in its annexes. Especially interesting are the original, splendidly furnished rooms in which Friedrich the Great once lived. More-over, highly valuable art collections can be found inside, e.g. the collection of 18-th century French paintings, which is the biggest one outside of France. The museum of prehistory and early history is also worth seeing. Another feast for the eyes is the castle garden, which is laid out as a French baroque garden and transitions over into an English landscape garden. In the castle garden itself, there is a teahouse, a Neapolitan villa, and a mausoleum.

Opening times for the museum are: daily except Monday from 09:00 o'clock to 17:00 o'clock. Other information can be found by calling: +49-30-32091440.
