The protestant cathedral in Berlin was built between 1894 and 1905 in late Italian Renaissance style. The classic church originally standing on this site was torn down to make room for the cathedral. The cathedral is surrounded by a pleasure garden and is situated on an island in the Spree River between Museum Island and the former city castle at the beginning of Unter den Linden Street. In 2006 the top of the cathedral was dismantled for renovation purposes.
