Berlin - chancellor's office

chancellor's office

When in 2001 former Chancellor Schröder entered the newly-built chancellor's office, he thought "a little bit smaller would have been fine, too." However, his predecessor Helmut Kohl had wished for a building which could compete with the Reichstag. Thus architect Schultes's suggestion for the construction of the chancellor's office won. The impressive building is a part of the 900m-long band of alliance, a straight architectural axis which was built right beside the Reichstag between 1997 and 2003. Running beyond the Spree River curve, the band of alliance symbolizes the political division of power and connects the two halves of the city divided by the Berlin Wall between 1945 and 1990.
